Dr Mariusz Wolbinski

We were delighted when Mariusz Wolbinski chose to continue his cardiology practice in the area of interventional and structural heart disease at Peninsula Heart Centre.

PHC is an ever evolving practice and as such, with a young and talented doctor with vast experience in structural heart disease, we saw the opportunity to learn and develop new techniques and technology following his recent training.

A New Zealand trained interventional cardiologist who had the opportunity to work with national leaders in cardiology at Wellington and Waikato Hospitals, he was inspired to undertake an advanced fellowship at Columbia University Medical Centre in New York from 2018 – 2020, focusing on dedicated key-hole heart valve treatments, many of which are still yet to be introduced around the world. With experience working alongside his teachers and mentors, Drs. Susheel Kodali, Vinnie Bapat, Isaac George and internationally renowned Martin Leon, reinforced his interest in innovation, evolving technologies and his desire to work within a team of likeminded cardiologists at cardiologists.

Over his career to date he has honed his skills performing more than 1100 coronary artery stenting procedures including chronic total occlusions and 350 trans-catheter aortic valve implants. Offering advanced heart failure support, he is experienced in CT evaluation of heart structures and 3D transoesophageal echo heart imaging. This is the foundation of what we see to be his valuable contribution to our centre and one that has been welcomed by the local hospitals, GPs and fellow cardiology community.

We have been fortunate to have him share with us and extend our knowledge base offering support to his colleagues in the latest techniques developed internationally. Mariusz’s success in introducing transcatheter mitral valve therapy to Peninsula Private Hospital led him to proctoring Vivek Gupta to full accreditation and continues this role with other like-minded cardiologists in this highly technical procedure. Similarly, he partnered with Greg Szto in the tricuspid space when they implanted the very first TRIC valves in a Victorian private hospital providing much needed symptom relief for patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation.

Being down to earth and approachable, Mariusz is always warmly welcomed by the medical and nursing staff at Peninsula Private Hospital It is keenly evident how easily he forms trusting relationships with the patients who are admitted under his care and with whom he has managed as outpatients during general consulting and cardiac testing. Given the complexity of his procedures, he spends an inordinate amount of his time working up CT images, planning procedures and meeting with patients and their families to ensure all medical therapy is delivered appropriately and ultimately, with favourable outcomes in a high risk population.

Mariusz easily adapted and settled into a beachside area on the Mornington Peninsula, that he now calls home.
