Dr Sam Mirzaee
Dr Sam Mirzaee joined our team at Peninsula Heart Centre in early February 2020 bringing with him, expertise in pacing and rhythm management and his special interest in lipid disorders. He boasts an impressive record as both a practicing cardiologist and accomplished academic having completed over 40 manuscript and abstract publications and more recently, his PhD at Monash University.
Sam completed his Physician training at Eastern Health in 2011, prior to undertaking a research fellow position at Barwon Health with a concurrent Master of Public Health at Monash University in 2012. In 2016, he completed his advanced training in cardiology at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane and ultimately, completed his cardiology fellowship at Monash Medical Centre in 2019. Whilst completing his fellowship, he had the opportunity to concentrate on his specialty interest and foundation of his PhD, when he led a unique multidisciplinary advanced lipid disorder clinic. This experience has resulted in the development of a local Cardio-metabolic clinic which focusses on those patients who have familial hyperlipidaemia and lipid management difficulties. His knowledge and expertise will meet a growing need amongst our high risk patients and offer them alternate strategies to reduce their cardiovascular risk. He initiates patients onto PSK9 inhibitors and counsels them throughout this process, offering further support. As a certified Lipidologist, he is eager to share his knowledge with the wider medical and GP community.
Possessing a caring nature, Sam has easily established a rapport with our patients. He has expertly identified and managed complex rhythms following Loop recorder insertion and has performed a number of pacemaker insertions including assisting Greg with cardiac resynchronization therapies. He is abreast of all pacing algorithms which he expertly manages during the busy pacemaker clinics.
He is available to support us with AV node ablations for those problematic atrial arrhythmias including atrial flutter ablation and in due course and Pulmonary vein isolation when it becomes available at Peninsula Private Hospital.
Having Greg Szto as a qualified proctor, Sam aims to include Watchman LAAO closure to his skill set. This will allow him to offer a full rhythm management + stroke protection plan to our patients.
Sam is certified by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists in Cardiac CT Level A and routinely reports all of our Multi slice cardiac CT procedures. This provides total cardiovascular care when identifying patients at risk and enables early medical intervention.
Sam’s softly spoken, gentle approach very quickly puts our hospital and outpatients at ease. He has a wide knowledge base on which to practise and this is evident in the attention to detail and treatment offered in the most complex of cases.
Being firm friends from Monash Medical Centre, Sam can be found at the end of his working day sitting having coffee with Vivek discussing their day’s activities. He enjoys his weekend catch up with Greg who will mentor Sam in the more advanced pacing procedures and offer guidance as he begins his professional life in private practice.
The collegial relationships within PHC make an environment that is not only beneficial to our patients’ continuity of care, but for the doctors who share in the knowledge and experiences they each have to offer.
